Oppo Electronics Corp., Ltd, one of the premiere electronic manufacturing companies in China, recently released another device that has the potential to follow the footsteps of their other popular products like the Blu-ray player and the 6.65mm Finder smartphone which was once the thinnest smartphone in the world. Oppo figures to make a mark in the industry with its new Find 5 full HD smartphone which is one of the first to integrate the 5 inch display technology.
Display. With a 5.0 inch IPS LCD screen accented by a 1920 x 1080 resolution and an incredible pixel density of 441 PPI, you are surely in for a different experience as you will be treated to crystal clear images with colors so vibrant, it feels like you are looking at the real thing. Plus, the large capacitive multi-touch screen offers the best viewing angles and utilizes the OGS technology. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 2.
Design. Another defining factor for the Find 5 is its minimalistic design. It is characterized by subtle shapes and curves giving it a simple yet sophisticated look. The back is made of white plastic with steel frame inside. The 165 gram smartphone has dimensions of 141.8 x 68.8 x 8.9 mm which is a bit thicker than the Finder.
Performance. Find 5 is powered by the quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon S4 chipset and runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.1.1 operating system. It also has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.
Camera. The Find 5 features one of the most advanced camera ever put in a smartphone. Its 13 megapixel rear camera is supported by HDR hardware and comes with the CMOS technology, f/2.2 aperture, blue glass filters, and four layers of coating. The 1/3.06 type camera can take 100 pictures in just five seconds thanks to its impressive Burst Mode feature. Its 1.9 megapixel front camera is also not bad at all.
The Find 5’s video recording capability is another thing to watch out for. The device is the first smartphone that can record 120 frames per second (fps) at 480p which allows very clear slow-motion play and freeze frames.
You can purchase a Find 5 with the international software version which includes Google Now, Google Chrome (standard browser), pre-installed Facebook and the suite of Google apps and widgets. The other software version available is mainly for the Chinese. Their firmware includes apps such as Weibo (microblogging) and Taobao (ecommerce) which are used mainly in China.
Connectivity. The international market will be a little bit disappointed with the inability of the Find 5 to support LTE, which has yet to arrive in China. They make use of HSPA+ 21 which is adequate enough for some users. If you intend to use the Find 5 for third party phone services such as voice calls and VoIP calls, you may want to inquire with service providers such as RingCentral if this smartphone is compatible with their service.
The Find 5 also has a not so impressive battery life. When the large screen is used heavily and always in high brightness, most of the battery’s power is used up. While in this condition, the battery life lasts for less than a day. However, for light to moderate usage, battery life is manageable.
With the Oppo Find 5 most likely designed with the Chinese market in mind, it will be a surefire hit in the country and probably in nearby Asian countries. If Oppo intends to penetrate the international market and become an integral player in the smartphone industry, they need to make necessary adjustments to their products and mindset. The Find 5, however, is a step in the right direction.
