Is iPhone 5’s launch planned for this fall?

The iPhone 5 has fuelled great expectations over the last year. iPhone fans were disappointed with the iPhone 4S as it was not much of an improvement over the iPhone 4. Most iPhone 4 users are expected to shift to the iPhone 5 when it releases as it has been close to 2 years since they last bought a phone.

The question that has been plaguing the industry is when the launch would be taking place. Quite a few pointers show that the iPhone 5 will definitely be launched this fall. In fact, rumours say that it may be launched as early as August 7th. The consensus is that the iPhone 5 will definitely be launched sometime within the first 2 weeks of August. The launch date has been moved up from October following the launch of Motorola Droid Razr and Samsung Galaxy Note.

The clearest indicator that the launch is imminent is the stockpiling of Nano SIMs by carriers in the US and Europe. The iPhone 5 is rumoured to be compatible only with Nano SIMs. The only piece of the iPhone 5 owned by the carriers is the SIM card, so this is a good indicator that the launch is imminent. Experts speculate that shifting to this standard will allow greater space within the phone for a bigger battery or more design elements.

Some of the new features that are expected in this iteration are iOS 6, replaceable camera, a 4 inch screen that supports an aspect ratio of 16:9 and the Retina Display. The display is expected to have a resolution of 1136×640. iOS 6 is touted as the “greatest OS ever”. Some of the expected features are integration with Facebook and greater access to iCloud. A welcome change is the change in position of the front camera to the center of the device which will enhance Facetime’s usability.

The ability to replace the camera is a sharp departure from Apple’s usual design philosophy, but might encourage more people to purchase the product as it guarantees a better lifetime. Other rumoured changes include a shift in the position of the headphone jack to the bottom of the phone from the top. Apple has also changed the dock to a 16-pin dock, from the usual 30-pin dock. Company executives have stated that the 16-pin dock will be the new standard for Apple devices going forward. This will allow more space for the other components of the phone.
