Are the iPhone 5 Updates Enough?

With the most recent release of Apple’s iPhone 5, the Apple fanatics have been going crazy over all of the new updates, but that is to be expected. The real test will come down to how to iPhone will react in the overall marketplace, not just among those already dedicated to Apple. The question is, however, has Apple done enough to update the phone to a point where it can bring over Android users on top of on the fence buyers? A lot of the updates Apple made were more of a catch up versus an industry innovator. The updates that have been made really puts Apple back in the game versus letting them take the lead. So where has Apple fallen short with this newest release? Screen Size  Screen size is sometimes overlooked, but it really can be a big persuader over how you pick a phone. In fact, it was a factor that was helping out Android based phones. Apple’s newest release definitely has a bigger screen, but it’s still not quite up to Android levels, not to mention, it’s only a catch up, not a new innovation. The bigger screen for Apple will be more appealing, especially with media and game applications that people want to enjoy on their phones. Samsung is even poking fun at this with their new commercial, talking about how Samsung had these changes long before Apple did. As of now, they’re just about right. Map Applications  This may be the biggest disappointment so far for Apple’s new iPhone 5. Apple didn’t want to keep using the Google based map system, most likely to break their tie with their smartphone competitor. Unfortunately for Apple, there has been a lot of disappointment over the Apple’s map application due to it’s flaws, and outdated map usage. This isn’t to say it’s all bad, and Apple using a vector based map might really help cut down on the lag time Google Maps take to load, but does it make up for the clear flaws of the application overall? With such a trusted app like Google Maps, it’s hard to see why Apple moved from them when they still had a year left with the developer. So while the iPhone is getting a lot of attention, as most Apple releases do, it’s not certain if it will cut the mustard or not. It is a really cool device, but there is nothing about it that takes it to a new level, and a level that will help it surpass Android in the market. It will help it catch up on the iPhone’s dwindling popularity, but there is no sign of it really kicking it up a notch in the overall world market. Hopefully with some more updates and advanced app development, Apple might have a chance to take it’s place back on top of mobile technology.
