Online Shopping Ten Years into the Future – Infographic

For those of us looking to shop smart, comparing pricing is important and no where is that easier than online. Thanks to the internet, retail has been streamlined into a process that prioritizes convenience for the consumer at nearly all levels.

And there’s one retailer that seems to do it better than most. Amazon.

It’s been about ten years or so since Jeff Bezos took the online retailer and marketplace to new territory by giving consumers the option to sign up for Amazon Prime, allowing them to expedite all shipping with an annual membership fee.

Having purchases shipped to your home faster and for less made many question the efficacy of brick-and-mortar stores now that online retailers had the ability to seemingly offer more. It’s this looking forward that has made Amazon the largest retailer in the US, outpacing giant competitors like Wal-Mart.

What else could be coming from the company in the next ten years?

One of Bezos’ most used innovations are autonomous machines in their warehouses. These little robots assist their human counterparts by moving purchases through different stages of processing and shipping. In time they may remove the human element entirely, automating warehouses for faster processing.

Autonomous machines may also be the method of delivery Amazon chooses moving forward. In certain parts of the US and the UK, Amazon has tested drone delivery for small packages to the home or office. And Bezos has expressed interest in the many companies testing autonomous semi trucks, meaning shipping of purchases can become a 24-hour-a-day service without having to account for a driver’s fatigue.

But the robot revolution may take one step further in retail by removing delivery from the equation. With 3-D printers increasing in popularity, many are working on ways to package different kinds of materials for printing. This means with a certain cartridge, consumers can purchase software from Amazon and print food, clothing or toys.
The following Infographic by ShopSmart analyses how online shopping will be bright and seemingly limited only by imagination. But only time will tell how wild it’ll really become.
